Ajinkya Chodankar, otherwise known as AJ, moved to Campbell River from Mumbai, India for NIC’s Culinary Arts program only six months ago. It didn’t take him long to realize that Vancouver Island is quite different from Vancouver but nonetheless, he feels right at home.
Having completed Cook One at NIC’s Campbell River campus, in the fall semester, AJ will continue on to Cook Two and he’s already looking forward to being a part of this year’s Flavour: the North Island’s Gourmet Picnic. “I can’t wait to be a part of this huge, fun gathering of so many people who are passionate about the same things I am.”
Flavour: the North Island’s Gourmet Picnic, a culinary festival and fundraiser organized by the North Island College Foundation, will take place on September 15th at Coastal Black Estate Winery & Meadery.
Proceeds from the event will be directed towards scholarships and bursaries for NIC Culinary Arts and Tourism & Hospitality students and the North Vancouver Island Chefs’ Association.
“It’s awesome what this event gives back,” he says excitedly. “I know what it feels like to be a student. To know that someone out there is looking out for you makes you feel good. It gives you a push to go forward and pursue your dreams.”
AJ would like to continue his education, working towards a Red Seal designation. He hopes to make his home here in Canada and eventually own his own bakery where he will bake his favourite herb bread and eat his favourite chocolate truffles.
Guests at this year’s Flavour, the family-friendly and foodie focused fundraiser will sample a delicious array of food and beverage offerings from over sixty exhibitors, while enjoying live entertainment by Annie Becker and The Big Mess at Coastal Black Estate Winery’s immaculate grounds.
Tickets to Flavour are sold out, but it’s not too late for a chance to win promotional tickets. The Flying Canoe Liquor Store, an event sponsor, will be hosting wine and beer tastings on September 13 and 14. Drop by, sample some of the product being presented at Flavour, and enter to win one of three pairs of tickets to the event. Also listen to the Eagle 97.3FM, another of our fabulous sponsors, who will be giving away numerous tickets to Flavour in the lead up to the event.
